In June 2018, Dream Theater secluded themselves in a private location in upstate New York to begin writing for the new record. While spending the summer living together in the property’s adjacent residence, the band spent their days and nights crafting the music that would make up the new album in the ‘Yonderbarn’; a beautiful and spacious barn that had been meticulously transformed into a state-of-the art film and recording studio. Following an intense & extremely productive period of group writing sessions and wanting to retain the magic that was captured in this scenic and inspiring location, they decided to record the album in the very room they had all convened to write together in. Living together during the writing and recording for Distance Over Time marked another first for the band’s 33-year career. The result is a heavier collection of songs that showcases the early roots of the band while exploring new territory as musicians and as friends.

Dream Theater is also planning to hit the road in support of the new album. The Distance Over Time Tour of North America was recently announced and kicks off on March 20, 2019 in San Diego, CA. The tour will run for seven weeks before wrapping up in Mexico City on May 4, 2019.

Two-time Grammy-nominated and millions-selling progressive music titans Dream Theater have released another song from their recently announced 14th studio album, Distance Over Time. “Fall Into The Light” is the second new song from the album slated for worldwide release on February 22, 2019. The new song builds upon the excitement that the band created in December with the release of the first track from Distance Over Time, “Untethered Angel,” that has been viewed over 1.5 million times in 4 weeks since its release. “Fall Into The Light” is a riff-driven, epic musical experience that takes the listener on a 7-minute emotional journey, something Dream Theater does all too well. The video for “Fall Into The Light” can be seen here:

“‘Fall Into The Light’ is about the quest towards enlightenment that exists in life,” explains bassist John Myung. “It is more about the underlying themes of life’s journey and less about what happens once you get there. It is a song of introspection; about looking inside to find your individual happiness.”

Distance Over Time showcases a newfound creativity for Dream Theater while maintaining the elements that have garnered them devoted fans around the globe. Two-time Grammy-nominated and millions-selling progressive music titans Dream Theater have released the first song from their recently announced 14th studio album, Distance Over Time. “Untethered Angel” is the first new song from the album slated for worldwide release on 22nd February, 2019. The new single is quintessential Dream Theater and takes the listener on a musical journey that cements the band’s place as the premier progressive metal band around today. Watch the video for the new single here:

“During the writing and recording process of D/T, ‘Untethered Angel’ was known as ‘Song 4’ to all of us as it was the 4th song written during the sessions. However, there has always been something about this track that just begged for it to be the album opener, even long before all of the songs were written,” explains John Petrucci. “Fear is something that rears it’s ugly head at some point or another in all of our lives. Fear of the unknown, fear of taking chances, fear of making mistakes. If we are not careful, it can be debilitating and sadly prevent us from realizing our true potential. The world we live in can be a scary place and the thought of an uncertain future a terrifying notion, especially for today’s young people. Untethering from that fear and giving yourself up to the future’s countless possibilities is what will ultimately set you free.’”

Distance Over Time showcases a newfound creativity for Dream Theater while maintaining the elements that have garnered them devoted fans around the globe. Two-time Grammy-nominated and millions-selling progressive music titans Dream Theater announce the forthcoming worldwide release of their 14th studio album, Distance Over Time on February 22, 2019. Distance Over Time showcases a newfound creativity for Dream Theater while maintaining the elements that have garnered them devoted fans around the globe. The album also marks the first for the band’s new label InsideOutMusic / Sony Music. The artwork was created by long-time cover collaborator Hugh Syme (Rush, Iron Maiden, Stone Sour). Distance Over Time was produced by John Petrucci, mixed by Ben Grosse and mastered by Tom Baker.

“When I listen back to the album, I can distinctly recall every moment of the writing process; where I was standing in the room, what inspired us in that instant and the meaning behind each song. As a producer, my goal was to try and create the best-sounding Dream Theater record we’ve ever made so that listeners can just be enveloped in the music. I really wanted this recording to truly reflect the spirit, joy and passion that went into making the album and for people to walk away feeling some of the organic nature, personality and raw energy that the band captured while together in the studio. For me, I think it accomplishes that and I hope that other people will feel the same way,” explains John Petrucci.

In June 2018, Dream Theater secluded themselves in a private location in upstate New York to begin writing for the new record. The result is a heavier collection of songs that showcases the early roots of the band while exploring new territory as musicians and as friends.

“It was like going back to summer camp,” adds James LaBrie. “Being around each other the whole time made it that much more of a profound experience. I think the songs reflect the energy. It was a lot of fun to have a situation so powerful at this point in our career.”

It has been 3 years since Dream Theater released new music. To announce the details of the brand new album, Dream Theater enlisted the help of one lucky contest winner to break the news of the record to the loyal fans of the band. An Alternate Reality Game was launched that encompassed a “treasure hunt” whereby fans were able to search for clues hidden in various photos, videos, social media posts, and more. Ultimately, one lucky winner was given access to content before everyone else including the release date and cover artwork, and the winner would be the one to share the first taste of never before heard music.

Dream Theater is also planning to hit the road in support of the new album. The Distance Over Time Tour of North America was recently announced and kicks off on March 20, 2019 in San Diego, CA. The tour will run for seven weeks before wrapping up in Mexico City on May 4, 2019. Information on tickets for all upcoming shows as well as VIP packages can be found at www.dreamtheater.net/tour. More tour dates for the worldwide tour will be announced in the near future.

In late 2017, Dream Theater signed with Sony Music’s progressive imprint InsideOutMusic. Now, in preparation for the band’s fourteenth studio album and their first album ever produced in collaboration with this leading worldwide label, they are pleased to announce that they have entered the studio to begin the writing process.

Recently, John Petrucci and James LaBrie shared a quick video update from the writing sessions…

James comments: “We’ve been here for one week and it is going sensational. Everybody is in the one room…and I gotta tell you, if the first week is any indication of where this album is going, you’re in for a treat.”

John adds: “There’s a lot of ideas flowing, and it’s already been really productive after only a week in. So far the music is heavy, progressive, melodic, shredding and it’s epic.”

The band will hold a live Facebook Q&A with fans during their time in the studio on June 28th at 3PM Eastern Time / 8pm UK time. Make sure to tune in! For a first impression of the studio, watch John’s tour here:

In a career that has spanned in excess of 30 years and during which they have sold more than eight million albums, two-time Grammy-nominated US progressive-metal band Dream Theater has never done the predictable. This was evident with the release of their ambitious 2015 concept album ‘The Astonishing’ and the elaborately-produced tour that followed.

Now Dream Theater is pleased to announce that they have signed with Sony Music worldwide, through Sony’s leading progressive music label imprint InsideOutMusic, for the release of the band’s forthcoming 14th studio album. They join an impressive roster of bands, many of which wouldn’t exist without Dream Theater blazing a trail before them, and inspiring young musicians since the early ‘90s.

The band comments: “We are all really excited about signing a brand-new record deal with InsideOut/Sony! We’ve known Thomas Waber for a very long time and it’s great to finally get a chance to work together. Thomas’ enthusiasm, energy, music industry expertise and positive outlook towards the future of DT’s recording career has been incredible to witness, and we have no doubt that being part of the InsideOut/Sony family will be an amazing creative and professional experience for all of us!”

InsideOutMusic Label Head / A&R Thomas Waber adds: “This is what the term ‘coming full circle’ was invented for. We’ve followed the band closely ever since they started touring in Europe in 1993, and there has been a lot of history and friendship between DT and us for close to 25 years. Stepping up to the plate to join with them for this next important chapter in their career feels like the natural and right thing to do. I can’t wait to get started!”

Sony Music Germany CFO Philip von Esebeck continues: “This is an important signing in our goal to support and grow the InsideOutMusic label as a brand, and we are very excited at Sony Music to welcome Dream Theater to our roster of top-tier artists!”

Since completing the theatrical stage presentation/fifteen-month touring cycle for ‘The Astonishing,’ Dream Theater have been circling the world in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the band’s much-loved and gold-selling record ‘Images & Words,’ their breakthrough album which spawned the Top 10 hit “Pull Me Under.”

Beginning in February 2017, the band has played in Europe, Japan, Australia, India, South East Asia, and the Middle East and just finished up their tour in North America.

For almost 25 years, InsideOutMusic has been one of the leading labels worldwide for progressive music and is part of the Century Media Label Group, a division of Sony Music.
